Ukraine - Continues to move forward against corruption

Since 2014, after the Maidan, Ukraine has been pushed, by international donors, as well as moving forward as a country, due to the goals of Maidan, to move on from the corrupt governments of the past. On February 20, the GRECO, Fourth Round Evaluation  was released and it was a continuing reassuring move forward. The Council of Europe’s announcement  noted that there was  “recorded progress in implementing its recommendations to ensure effective supervision of the existing financial declaration requirements; to regulate the engagement of parliamentarians with lobbyists; to streamline the process of appointment of judges and related bodies. Important legislation has been adopted, and members of the High Council of Justice, of the High Qualification Commission of Judges, and of the Public Council of Integrity were appointed.”

What this means is that the anti-corruption agencies and government are performing as they were intended – there is increased enforcement and corrupt monies are being returned into the government’s coffers. But this is not the time to pat themselves on the back, they must continue to move forward, and the Ukrainian journalists and CSOs must not let off the pressure. With the very volatile situation today, this is a positive step in Ukraine’s fight against corruption.
