Hope in America – Drain the Swamp Act
Earlier this week US House of Representative Ro Khanna, from California, made a positive statement as he “is introducing the Drain The Swamp Act, which would permanently prohibit White House officials from accepting gifts from lobbyists -- reinstating a Biden-era mandate that established ethics and lobbying rules for appointees in the administration.”
It is good to see this as he emphasizes the need for anti-corruption in the US government , and with a name like Drain the Swamp, this should have support from both sides of the aisle. He brings forward some interesting concepts, he wants to ban former members of Congress from ever lobbying Congress, and he wants to impose 12-year term limits for members and 18-year term limits on Supreme Court justices. These may seem radical but they would bring down some of the potential for corruption. Lobbyists are one area where the possibility for corruption is immense.
Overall, this is welcome, but in the environment that exists presently in the US, the chances that this will be considered seriously are low, though possible.
