Corruption, the US Department of Justice and Cryptocurrency
In this article we again find ourselves going down the rabbit hole of potential corruption at the heart of the US government. “The Justice Department plans to dismantle a unit dedicated to enforcing cryptocurrency regulations just as President Donald Trump’s crypto venture raises hundreds of millions after stablecoin launch, according to a memo.”
The Washington Post also noted that “Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the department will no longer pursue cases that he described as better left to financial regulatory agencies. Instead, prosecutors should focus on investigating people who commit crimes using cryptocurrency, such as defrauding investors, dealing narcotics and enabling human trafficking, Blanche said.”
The Justice Department is now directed to move away from pursuing litigation against crypto companies accused of violating securities, commodities or banking secrecy laws. In the past those statutes were used to secure the convictions of three founders of the cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX in 2022. And, then Trump issued pardons to all three.
What can be done? Unfortunately, as noted previously in two earlier analyses, one on 19 February and the other one on 9 April , there is clear movement by the Trump administration to minimize regulations on US companies, both nationally and worldwide, encouraging corrupt behaviors. As was noted earlier, the only way presently to ensure that all information regarding the Department of Justice’s actions are publicly discussed and debated, is to rely on those people following the Department as well as US citizens and Congress to continue shining a light on all the unprecedented actions.
