Hungary-US relations – lifting sanctions and increasing corruption
As we have seen since Mr. Trump has become the US president, his administration has weakened anti-corruption regulations and has been clear that they will not be prosecuting crimes which come from corruption. This week Politico EU reported that they have moved one more step forward in support of corruption, through lifting sanctions against the Hungarian politician, Mr. Antal Rogan, a senior aide to the Hungarian President, Victor Orban, noting that they were “inconsistent with U.S. foreign policy interests.” Mr. Rogan had been accused of “orchestrated schemes designed to control several strategic sectors of the Hungarian economy.” The profits from his alleged misconduct were funneled “to himself and to reward loyalists from his political party,” the Treasury said at the time about the Fidesz politician.” This had been investigated by the US Department of Treasury and presently nothing has changed, except for the fact that there is a more relaxed presidential administration regarding corruption.
Unfortunately, my usual question of what can be done is not effective in this situation. All that I can say is that we should keep on reporting on these changes and actions and ensure that maybe not today, but hopefully in some future tomorrow, we will be able to review these actions and decide on more appropriate behaviors.
